New Delhi: In a strong show of unity against the Central Government’s alleged anti-worker stance, the nationwide strike initially set for June 20 has been rescheduled to July 9, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) announced. The postponement comes in light of the prevailing national situation, the union said in its statement.
The protest is being spearheaded by 14 major national trade unions, along with associations of central and state government employees, and workers from key public sector sectors like banking and insurance. The unified front accuses the government of aggressively pushing forward controversial labour codes, despite the country grappling with deep economic and social crises.
CITU slammed the Centre for attempting to dilute workers’ rights and protections, warning that the new labour codes represent a dangerous rollback of hard-earned labour gains. The July 9 strike is expected to be a major expression of resistance across the country.
