Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing a fresh spell of heavy rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues yellow alerts across multiple districts. Central and southern parts of the state are expected to receive widespread rainfall over the next few days, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching up to 40 km/h.
Weather experts predict that the northeast monsoon (Thulavarsham) will make its onset over Kerala within the next two days, marking the official start of the rainy season.
A yellow alert has been sounded today in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts due to the likelihood of heavy showers. The IMD has also issued extended alerts for the coming days across several other regions.
On Thursday and Friday, yellow alerts will be in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur. By Saturday, alerts will cover Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad, indicating the possibility of intense downpours.
The IMD has warned fishermen to avoid venturing into the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts, citing rough sea conditions and strong wind activity.
