Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon has officially advanced over key regions of the Arabian Sea, marking the onset of the rainy season in South India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon activity is now active over the southeastern Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region, parts of the Andaman Sea, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the southern Bay of Bengal.
In response to the changing weather conditions, the IMD has issued yellow alerts for 12 districts in Kerala over the next few days. Alerts are in place for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram on Friday; Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Sunday; and Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod on Monday.
Meanwhile, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves between 0.3 to 0.7 meters along the Kerala coast due to the ‘Kallakkadal’ (swell surge) phenomenon, likely to persist until 11:30 PM on Friday. Fishermen and coastal communities have been advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety amid the potential threat of sea incursions.
