Modi Congratulates Mark Carney on Becoming Canada’s PM, Eyes New Chapter in India-Canada Ties

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm congratulations to Mark Carney on his election as the Prime Minister of Canada, following the Liberal Party’s notable victory in the 2025 federal elections. In a message that underscored mutual democratic values, Modi expressed optimism about deepening the India-Canada partnership.

“Look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership,” PM Modi said, emphasizing the shared respect and strong people-to-people bonds between the two countries.

Mark Carney, former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in March 2025 and was sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on March 14. Under his leadership, the Liberals secured 167 seats, just five short of a majority in the House of Commons.

The campaign trail was notably shaped by external factors, including remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, which are believed to have energized Canadian voters and bolstered the Liberal win.

PM Modi’s message is being seen as a positive gesture amid recent diplomatic strains, signaling a potential reset in India-Canada relations. Both leaders have committed to pursuing greater cooperation and exploring fresh avenues for bilateral collaboration in the coming years.
