Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg and agreed to formally begin negotiations on a high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
The decision marks a crucial breakthrough after months of strained diplomatic ties. Both leaders expressed confidence that a renewed trade pact could elevate bilateral trade to USD 50–70 billion by 2030, more than double the current levels.
During the meeting, Modi and Carney discussed deepening cooperation in technology, investment, services, digital trade, energy, and civil nuclear collaboration, including talks on long-term uranium supply. The leaders also stressed the importance of resilient supply chains and innovation-driven growth.
Modi extended an invitation to Carney to visit India in early 2026, a move expected to further accelerate progress on the economic pact.
With the launch of CEPA negotiations, both nations signal a strong desire to turn the page, rebuild trust, and unlock new opportunities for business, mobility, and strategic cooperation across sectors.
