Mob Violence Reported in Bangladesh; Hindu Homes and Shops Vandalised

Dhaka: Incidents of mob violence were reported from parts of Bangladesh on Saturday, with attacks targeting Hindu households and businesses in separate areas, while a Muslim spiritual leader was killed in another incident, officials said.

In Rangpur, about 300 km northwest of Dhaka, an angry mob reportedly vandalised several Hindu-owned homes and shops in the early hours of the day. The unrest was linked to tensions following the death of a local youth in the area.

Police, however, said that a “third party” may have been involved in the vandalism, possibly to divert attention from the overnight killing of a man identified as Rakib Hassan.

In a separate incident in Kushtia district, a Muslim spiritual leader was allegedly hacked to death over claims of insulting religious sentiments, further adding to tensions.

Authorities have deployed police forces in affected areas and are monitoring the situation closely. Investigations are underway to determine the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible for the violence.
