Thiruvananthapuram, July 15: The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (MILMA) is likely to announce a hike in milk prices, with its board of directors set to meet today to take a final call. A proposed increase of ₹3 to ₹4 per litre is under serious consideration.
The high-level meeting, scheduled for 11 AM at MILMA’s headquarters in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, will bring together chairpersons and managing directors of all three regional unions. According to the federation’s chairman, any price revision will only be implemented after receiving the green light from the state government.
Support for the hike is split: while the Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam unions have backed the proposal, the Malabar union remains opposed. Notably, the Ernakulam union has recommended a steep ₹10 hike per litre, whereas the Thiruvananthapuram union has called for a hike based on rising production costs without specifying an amount.
MILMA had previously increased prices by ₹4 per litre in September 2019 and by ₹6 in December 2022. At present, the price of toned milk in Kerala stands at ₹52 per litre. The federation distributes approximately 17 lakh litres of milk daily across the state.
If approved, the price hike will lead to a proportional increase in the cost of all MILMA dairy products, with private producers expected to follow suit. Milk prices in Kerala are already among the highest in the country.
