Healthcare services at government medical colleges across Kerala are heading for major disruption as medical college doctors have announced an indefinite strike starting on the 13th, with only emergency services set to continue.
The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) said that teaching activities will be suspended from the 13th, followed by a complete halt to all non-emergency treatments from the following week. The decision was taken after earlier protest actions—such as OP boycotts and withdrawal of non-emergency services—failed to produce any positive response from the government.
The doctors are demanding the correction of anomalies in the pay revision order, release of pending dearness allowance arrears, an end to temporary mass transfers, and the creation of additional posts to ease the growing workload in medical colleges.
Association leaders said that while emergency care will remain uninterrupted, all other services, including routine consultations and elective procedures, will be stopped. They accused the government of ignoring their repeated appeals and failing to take constructive action.
With doctors in medical colleges proceeding on strike, hospital operations and patient care are expected to be severely affected, raising serious concerns among patients across the state.
