Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has taken a pioneering leap in child welfare with the launch of the ‘Kunjus Card’, a smart, science-backed initiative to track and nurture the growth of children in Anganwadis. Launched by Health Minister Veena George, the card aims to systematically monitor a child’s physical, cognitive, and sensory development — covering milestones in speech, hearing, vision, movement, and attention. Notably, dental health has also been incorporated, acknowledging its impact on overall well-being.
A key highlight of the card is its referral mechanism: if a child is found lagging in any developmental area, they are promptly referred for expert evaluation and care. The card captures vital data quarterly — from height and weight to immunization records, allergies, birth details, and Aadhaar information.
Progress is visually tracked using a color-coded bubble system — green for independent tasks, yellow for assisted efforts, and red for unmet milestones — allowing parents and Anganwadi workers to identify and address concerns early.
Developed through a collaboration between the Women and Child Development and Health Departments, with guidance from pediatricians and CDC experts, the Kunjus Card is expected to become a cornerstone in Kerala’s mission for holistic early childhood development and early intervention.
