Thiruvananthapuram: In a major shift affecting electric vehicle (EV) users across Kerala, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has hiked EV charging rates significantly during nighttime hours, while offering discounted rates during the day. The new time-based tariff structure, effective at all 63 KSEB-operated charging stations, is designed to promote the use of solar energy and reduce grid load at night.
Under the revised rates, charging your EV between 4 PM and 9 AM will now cost 30% more, while charging during the solar hours of 9 AM to 4 PM will be 30% cheaper.
The move aligns with new guidelines from the Union Ministry of Power, which mandates standardized service charges and sets caps for various charging categories. With the inclusion of these service fees, KSEB’s rates are now steeper than those at many private charging stations.
New EV Charging Rates (Including 18% GST):
Daytime (9 AM – 4 PM):
- AC Slow Charging: ₹10.08/unit
- DC Fast Charging: ₹19.47/unit
Nighttime (4 PM – 9 AM):
- AC Slow Charging: ₹16.79/unit
- DC Fast Charging: ₹27.41/unit
The differential pricing aims to make the most of abundant daytime solar power while easing pressure on the grid at night. However, with private players offering more competitive and flexible rates, the new KSEB tariff may strain the budgets of regular EV users dependent on public charging stations.
