Kochi is poised for a major urban transformation as Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) rolls out a ₹3,716 crore canal rejuvenation project to revive six of the city’s key canals—Perandoor, Chilavannur, Edappally, Thevara, Konthuruthy, and Market Canal. The initiative aims to breathe new life into these water bodies by converting them into navigable waterways lined with lush green walkways, leisure spaces, and modern infrastructure.
A central feature of the plan includes an 11.5 km boat service corridor between Muttar and Chitrapuzha via the Edappally and Chilavannur canals. Ten new boats will operate every 30 minutes, offering eco-friendly transport and helping to reduce road congestion.
In a move to boost tourism and urban wellness, the Chilavannur canal will also feature a Marine Drive-style waterfront complete with landscaped walking paths and recreational zones for water sports.
To prevent urban flooding, a 90-meter bridge will be built on Bund Road and the Subash Chandra Bose Road bridge will be reconstructed. Additionally, ₹1,325 crore has been allocated for four modern sewage treatment plants at Elamkulam, Vennala, Perandoor, and Muttar, ensuring cleaner waterways and improved waste management.
This landmark project underscores Kochi’s commitment to sustainability, modern mobility, and enhancing quality of life—setting a national example for eco-urban development.
