Kochi: Kochi witnessed an outpouring of grief as the city bid a solemn farewell to legendary Malayalam actor, writer and filmmaker Sreenivasan. His mortal remains were kept for public homage at the Ernakulam Town Hall, where thousands of admirers, along with leaders from the film and political spheres, gathered to pay their last respects.
After the public viewing concluded, Sreenivasan’s body was taken to his residence at Udayamperoor. The Town Hall remained crowded throughout the day as people lined up to honour the man whose wit, realism and social commentary shaped Malayalam cinema for decades.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led the tributes, joined by eminent film personalities including Mammootty and Mohanlal, who arrived to bid a final goodbye to their longtime colleague. Minister for Culture Saji Cherian, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, and MLA Roji M. John were also among the dignitaries who paid homage.
The public viewing, scheduled until 3 pm, was extended by nearly an hour in response to the overwhelming turnout. The body was later taken to the family home at Kandanad.
The funeral will be held at 10 am on Sunday at the family compound and will be conducted with full state honours, reflecting the immense contribution Sreenivasan made to Kerala’s cultural landscape.
