Kerala’s Karkidakam Dawn Marks Grand ‘Aanayoottu’ Ritual at Vadakkumnathan Temple

In a spectacular tradition marking the start of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, the Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur witnessed its iconic ‘Aanayoottu’ (feeding of elephants) ceremony, along with Maha Ganapathi Homam and Gajapooja rituals, drawing thousands of devotees from neighboring districts.

A total of 63 elephants, including seven female elephants, were part of the celebration. The ceremonial feeding began with Savitri Kutti, one of the temple elephants, receiving the first offering from the temple’s head priest, Sreeraj Narayanan Namboothiri.

The elephants were served a mix of special Ayurvedic preparations, traditional ingredients such as beaten rice (aval), puffed rice (malar), watermelon, and pineapple, which are believed to rejuvenate the animals during the monsoon season. This year marks the 43rd edition of the annual Aanayoottu ceremony at the temple.

Following the rituals, the Cochin Devaswom Board is set to begin a wellness and rejuvenation treatment program for the elephants from tomorrow.

Renowned personalities including singer Vijay Yesudas were present to witness the event. The Maha Ganapathi Homam was conducted at dawn under the guidance of the chief priest, followed by the rare Gajapooja at around 7:30 AM — an event that takes place only once every four years.

The offering for the Ganapathi Homam included 12,008 coconuts, 2,000 kg of jaggery, 2,000 kg of beaten rice, 500 kg of puffed rice, 60 kg of sesame seeds, 50 kg of honey, along with special lemons, sugarcane, and other sacred items.

The entire ritual served as a majestic blend of devotion, tradition, and care for animals, showcasing Kerala’s deep-rooted spiritual culture and reverence for elephants.
