Kerala to Implement Coastal Protection Measures at 30 Critical Sites Along 30 km Stretch

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced a major initiative to protect the state’s vulnerable coastal areas by implementing coastal protection measures at 30 critical locations spread across a 30-kilometre stretch.

The decision comes in response to increasing threats from sea erosion, especially during monsoons and extreme weather events, which have been causing severe damage to lives, homes, and livelihoods in the coastal belt.

The state government, in coordination with the Irrigation Department and coastal engineering experts, has identified these high-risk areas based on past damage reports, erosion patterns, and local demands. The project will involve the construction of sea walls, groynes, and other shoreline stabilization structures designed to prevent further erosion and safeguard coastal communities.

Funding for the initiative will come from both the state government and central assistance under disaster management and climate resilience programs. Environmental clearances and community consultations are being carried out to ensure minimal ecological disruption.

Officials said that work on several sites is expected to begin in the coming months, with completion targeted before the onset of the next monsoon season.

This move is part of a broader coastal management strategy that includes long-term plans for sustainable development, rehabilitation of affected families, and the creation of natural buffers such as mangroves.
