Kerala Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal announced that this month’s welfare pensions will be disbursed starting June 20, benefiting over 62 lakh people with ₹1,600 each.
Highlighting the government’s unwavering commitment to social security, Balagopal revealed that the current LDF government has spent ₹38,500 crore on welfare pensions over the past four years alone. Combined with the previous LDF term (2016–2021), which cleared legacy arrears and distributed ₹35,154 crore, the total pension payout under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s leadership has reached a staggering ₹73,654 crore in nine years.In stark contrast, the UDF government (2011–2016) spent just ₹9,011 crore, Balagopal pointed out.
Despite intense financial constraints due to what he termed as a “severe economic blockade” by the central government, the minister asserted that Kerala continues to prioritize welfare and dignity for its most vulnerable citizens.
