Kerala Shuts Down Schools and Colleges Amid Red Alerts for Heavy Rainfall on June 14–15

The Kannur District Collector has declared a two-day holiday for all educational institutions on June 14 and 15, including schools, colleges, anganwadis, professional institutes, and tuition centres. The decision follows a Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across northern districts.

According to IMD forecasts:

  • Red Alerts are in effect for Kannur and Kasaragod on June 14, extending to Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on June 15.
  • Orange and Yellow Alerts have been issued across several other districts, warning of 40–60 km/h winds and intense showers throughout the weekend.

Since the early onset of the monsoon on May 24, Kerala has already witnessed severe weather-related damage, including flooding, uprooted trees, and infrastructure breakdowns.

Authorities have placed disaster management teams on high alert, advised fishermen against venturing into rough seas, and urged the public to remain cautious.

Parents and students are strongly advised to stay indoors and monitor official updates, especially in districts under alert. Travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary during this period of intense rainfall.
