Kerala Sets Dates for Mayor and Panchayat Leadership Elections

Kerala is all set to elect the new leadership of its local self-government institutions, with Mayor and Municipal Chairperson elections scheduled for December 26. Polling will begin at 10.30 am, followed by the election of Deputy Mayors and Deputy Chairpersons after 2.30 pm.

The oath-taking ceremony of members elected in the recently concluded local body polls will be held on December 21 (Sunday), formally marking the beginning of a new administrative term.

Elections to the posts of President in Gram, Block and District Panchayats will take place on December 27 at 10.30 am, while Vice President elections are slated for 2.30 pm the same day. The presence of at least half the total voting members is required to form a quorum. In case quorum is not met, the election may be conducted on the next working day even without quorum.

With the completion of most election procedures, the Model Code of Conduct has been withdrawn across Kerala. However, it will remain in force in three local bodies where polling was postponed due to the death of candidates. These include Moothedam Gram Panchayat in Malappuram district, Pampakuda Gram Panchayat in Ernakulam district, and the 66th division (Vizhinjam) of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, until elections there are completed.
