Kozhikode: In a major breakthrough for Kerala’s healthcare system, the first patient diagnosed in the recent Nipah virus outbreak has made a full recovery, signaling a significant victory against the deadly infection. Health officials confirmed on Thursday that the patient, who had been in intensive care, has tested negative and is steadily regaining health.
This is only the second time in Kerala’s history that the index case in a Nipah outbreak—often associated with high fatality—has survived, thanks to swift action and advanced medical care.
Health Minister Veena George hailed the recovery as a “milestone moment,” crediting early diagnosis, strict isolation protocols, and prompt treatment for the positive outcome.
The initial case had triggered alarm across the state, with authorities swiftly launching rigorous contact tracing, testing, and containment operations. With no fresh cases reported in recent days, officials now believe the outbreak is under control.
Since its first emergence in Kerala in 2018, the Nipah virus has posed serious public health risks due to its high mortality rate and potential for human-to-human transmission. Vigilance remains high as authorities continue monitoring contacts and enforcing preventive measures in sensitive areas.
