Kerala Proposes Mandatory Solar Power for High-Energy Homes in New Green Push

In a major step towards sustainable living, the Kerala government has unveiled a draft energy policy mandating the installation of solar power systems in homes that consume over 500 units of electricity per month and have a rooftop space of at least 100 square meters. As per the draft, such households will be required to set up a minimum 1 kilowatt (kW) grid-connected solar power plant.

The initiative is part of the state’s broader push to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and promote eco-friendly practices. By integrating solar energy into high-consumption households, the government aims to boost energy self-sufficiency and protect the environment.

The policy also recommends that urban buildings install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, in a bid to support the growing shift towards e-mobility and ensure the infrastructure is ready for future transportation needs.

Currently open for public feedback, the draft policy will be refined based on suggestions from residents and stakeholders before its official rollout. The government encourages active public participation to ensure the policy meets Kerala’s long-term energy goals.
