Kerala Plunges Into Darkness as National Power Crisis Sparks Statewide Load Shedding

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has been thrust into emergency power management mode as a sudden nationwide energy crisis forces the state to enforce widespread load shedding. Triggered by an unexpected dip in electricity generation — due to acute fuel shortages and spiking demand amid scorching heat — the situation has strained power grids across India.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) confirmed a significant shortfall in the state’s power allocation from the central grid, prompting urgent rolling blackouts across both urban and rural regions. Some districts are experiencing outages of up to two hours, with schedules now in effect to manage the crisis.

“We are actively coordinating with the Centre to restore stability. In the meantime, we urge citizens to reduce non-essential power use, especially during peak hours,” said State Power Minister K. Krishnankutty.

While hospitals, water utilities, and critical infrastructure are spared, domestic users and industries are expected to face continued disruption unless national power production rebounds soon.

Officials have warned that if the supply crisis continues, load shedding may become longer and more frequent in the coming days. Emergency response teams are meeting daily to monitor the evolving situation and implement contingency plans.
