Kerala Nuns’ Arrest Sparks Political Uproar; Amit Shah Seeks Report, Bail Plea to Be Filed in NIA Court Today

New Delhi: The arrest of Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of religious conversion and human trafficking has escalated into a major political controversy, prompting Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek a detailed report from the state’s Chief Minister. Shah has also reportedly discussed the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is closely monitoring developments.

The matter gained traction in Parliament after several MPs, including N.K. Premachandran, brought it directly to Amit Shah’s attention on the Parliament premises. A delegation of UDF MPs is scheduled to meet the Home Minister today at noon to press for swift action. The letter submitted by Kerala MPs has already been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

MLA Roji M. John confirmed that a bail application will be filed today in the NIA court in Bilaspur, which has jurisdiction over the case. He also questioned the legality of producing the nuns before a lower court when the case is designated for NIA trial, and said approaching the High Court is also under consideration.

Opposition parties have announced their decision to raise the issue again in both houses of Parliament today, calling the arrests unjust and demanding transparency in the legal proceedings.

The Durg Sessions Court had refused to consider the bail plea, citing lack of jurisdiction and referring the petitioners to the NIA court. The Chhattisgarh government’s lawyer opposed bail on technical grounds and emphasized the seriousness of the charges, including human trafficking.

The case continues to draw national attention, with growing calls for accountability and legal clarity in the handling of the arrests.
