Kerala Minister Defends Film Awards Jury as Child Actress Deva Nandha Criticizes Children’s Film Snub

Thiruvananthapuram: A controversy has erupted in Kerala’s film fraternity after the 55th Kerala State Film Awards failed to recognise any film in the children’s category, drawing criticism from young actress Deva Nandha. Responding to the backlash, Minister for Films and Culture Saji Cherian defended the jury’s decision, stating that none of the entries met the required creative standards.

Cherian explained that out of 128 films submitted, only a small fraction were deemed worthy of serious consideration. “There were four children’s films submitted, and in the final round, two remained. However, the jury did not find sufficient creative merit to justify an award,” he said. The Minister added that the jury had recommended steps to promote and revive children’s cinema in the state — an area he acknowledged needs more institutional support.

Meanwhile, Deva Nandha, known for her acclaimed performances in Malayalam cinema, took to social media to express her disappointment. “It’s not right to deny awards and then say more children’s films should be made,” she wrote, pointing out strong performances in recent works like Sthaanarthi Sreekuttan, Gu, Phoenix, and A.R.M.. “You can look away from us, but don’t say there’s darkness all around,” she added, in a message that resonated with many in the industry.

The incident has reignited discussions about the neglect of children’s films in Malayalam cinema, with several filmmakers and artists calling for better incentives, funding, and platforms for young talent. While the government’s defence seeks to justify the jury’s discretion, the debate highlights a growing demand to ensure that children’s storytelling finds its rightful place in Kerala’s celebrated film culture.
