Kerala Lottery Tickets Spark Trouble for Passengers at Tamil Nadu Border

Travelers carrying Kerala lottery tickets are finding themselves in hot water at the Tamil Nadu border, where state authorities have intensified checks against the banned lottery system.

Police have confirmed that individuals caught with unsold or “live” Kerala lottery tickets—those whose results are yet to be declared—are being detained, as possession of such tickets is considered a violation of Tamil Nadu law.

“Despite heavy inter-state movement, we are tightening enforcement, especially for tickets awaiting results,” a Tiruppur police officer said.

Legal experts say the issue is not black-and-white. M. Sundareswaran, President of the Tiruppur District Lawyers Association, explained: “Possession of unsold lottery tickets is indeed an offense in Tamil Nadu. But in practice, it’s nearly impossible to check every passenger’s belongings at the border.”

The crackdown has left many unsuspecting travelers anxious, as Kerala remains a hub for lottery sales while neighboring Tamil Nadu enforces a strict ban.
