Kerala Lawyers Boycott Courts Demanding Rollback of Court Fee Hike

Lawyers across Kerala staged a statewide boycott of court proceedings today, protesting the recent hike in court fees implemented by the state government. The legal fraternity claims the increased fees have made access to justice unaffordable for many citizens, particularly the economically weaker sections.

Courts, including the Kerala High Court, witnessed minimal activity as advocates abstained from appearing for hearings. The protest was organized by various bar associations, including the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association, and received widespread support from district and taluk-level bar associations.

The protesting lawyers argue that the revised fee structure places an unfair financial burden on litigants, especially in civil and family cases where fees are calculated based on the value of the subject matter. They assert that the hike contradicts the constitutional promise of access to justice and may deter common people from seeking legal remedies.

Representatives of the legal community have demanded immediate withdrawal of the revised fee structure and a comprehensive consultation process with stakeholders before implementing any future changes. They warned that continued neglect of their demands could lead to an indefinite strike.

The state government has yet to respond officially to the protest. However, legal experts and human rights advocates have echoed the concerns, urging the government to reconsider the hike in the interest of ensuring equal access to justice for all citizens.
