Kerala Imposes Annual 52-Day Trawling Ban from June 9 to Protect Marine Life and Support Fishermen

The Kerala government has announced its annual 52-day trawling ban, effective from midnight on June 9 to midnight on July 31, 2025. This ban aims to protect the marine ecosystem during the crucial breeding season of various fish species, allowing fish populations to replenish and ensuring sustainable fishing in the long run. The state cabinet approved this important decision on June 5, reflecting Kerala’s ongoing commitment to environmental preservation.

Under the ban, all mechanised fishing boats are prohibited from operating within Kerala’s coastal waters, with only traditional inboard boats allowed, subject to strict safety regulations such as biometric identification and mandatory life jackets. Enforcement will be rigorous, with coastal police and district authorities ensuring compliance by requiring all out-of-state fishing vessels to leave Kerala waters before the ban begins. Dedicated 24/7 control rooms will monitor activities along the coast throughout the ban period.

To support the fishing community during this period of restricted activity, the government will provide free ration supplies to fishermen and allied workers. Neendakara Harbour in Kollam will remain open exclusively for traditional fishing boats, though fuel distribution at harbours and landing centers will be suspended, with select Matsyafed stations supplying diesel to eligible vessels.

This carefully timed ban is a vital conservation effort designed to curb overfishing during spawning seasons, thereby preserving marine biodiversity and strengthening Kerala’s fisheries for future generations. The government’s proactive measures highlight its dedication to balancing ecological sustainability with the livelihoods of its coastal communities.
