Kerala High Court to Watch ‘JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala’ Amid Title Row with Censor Board

The Kerala High Court has decided to personally screen the controversial Malayalam film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala on July 5, before delivering a verdict on the certification dispute raised by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The decision, made by Justice N. Nagaresh, comes in response to the CBFC’s objection to the use of the name “Janaki”, which the board claims could offend religious sentiments due to its association with Goddess Sita.

However, the court questioned the validity of this concern, noting that “Janaki” is a common and culturally neutral name, and emphasizing that the character in question is portrayed as a victim and a symbol of justice. “She is a heroine fighting for justice—what is wrong with naming her Janaki?” Justice Nagaresh remarked.

The film will be screened at Lal Media Studio, Palarivattom, with representatives from the production house Cosmos Entertainments and the CBFC (or their legal counsel) in attendance. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for July 9.

By opting to view the film firsthand, the court seeks to strike a fair balance between artistic freedom and public sensitivity, setting a progressive example in defending creative expression in cinema.
