Kerala High Court Backs Akshaya Entrepreneurs: Tells Govt to Review Service Charge Hike Plea

The High Court has stepped in to support Akshaya entrepreneurs by directing the state government to seriously consider their long-pending demand for increased service charges.

Justice K. Salma Jennath, while hearing a petition from Akshaya centre operators, emphasized that the state must assess the issue objectively and respond within a reasonable timeframe. The Court recognized the vital role Akshaya centres play in delivering essential digital services—especially in rural and underserved areas—and highlighted the need for a fair and sustainable compensation model.

Akshaya entrepreneurs argue that the current rates fail to match rising operational costs, including salaries, equipment upgrades, and service maintenance. Despite repeated appeals, authorities have taken little action—prompting legal intervention.

The court’s directive is seen as a crucial step toward justice for the thousands of entrepreneurs anchoring Kerala’s digital governance mission. The government is now expected to open discussions with stakeholders to revise the outdated service charge framework, paving the way for better service delivery and fairer business conditions.
