The Kerala government has constituted a high-level advisory committee to finalize the metro alignment, following an inconclusive meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The panel, led by the Chief Secretary, includes top officials from the finance, transport, revenue, and local self-government departments.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) had presented six route options, while additional proposals by MP Shashi Tharoor added to the complexity. The original alignment proposed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was set aside in favor of alternatives starting at Kazhakkoottam.
The finance department has already granted initial clearance, and groundwork is expected to begin in the 2025–26 financial year. Once the new alignment is finalized, KMRL will update the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submit it for state cabinet and central government approval.
With an estimated cost of ₹11,560.8 crore, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro aims to decongest city roads and improve urban mobility. Finalizing the alignment is a critical milestone for securing central funds and staying on track with the project timeline.
