Kerala Govt Moves High Court Against SIR; All-Party Meet Had Favoured Legal Challenge

The Kerala government has approached the High Court challenging the implementation of the Standardisation of Electoral Rolls (SIR) process in the state. The decision comes in line with the political consensus reached earlier this month, when an all-party meeting concluded that the SIR exercise should be legally contested.

According to the state government, the SIR process—initiated by the Election Commission—may lead to practical difficulties and could potentially disrupt existing electoral procedures. The all-party meeting, attended by major political fronts and independent representatives, unanimously agreed that the new process required judicial scrutiny before being enforced in Kerala.

The government’s petition argues that the SIR rollout could adversely affect election preparations and voter-list management in the state. With the matter now before the High Court, further hearings and directives will determine the next steps in the implementation of the SIR in Kerala.
