Kerala Expands Wayanad Landslide Relief: 49 More Victims Added to Rehabilitation List

The Kerala government has added 49 more victims of the Wayanad landslides to its official rehabilitation list. The decision was finalized during today’s cabinet meeting, offering long-awaited relief to families affected by the devastating landslides at Chooralmala and Mundakkai.

The update comes after the Wayanad District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) submitted an appeal highlighting that several eligible victims were left out due to technical oversights. With the cabinet’s approval, these 49 individuals will now be included as beneficiaries of the Wayanad Township Rehabilitation Project.

Revenue Minister K. Rajan confirmed that the DDMA had recommended 48 names along with one special case, and the government has accepted all of them. “These individuals were excluded due to technical issues. The cabinet has rectified this and ensured justice for those overlooked,” he said.

The original list, which named 402 beneficiaries, had sparked widespread protests from residents who alleged unfair exclusions. Particularly in Punchirimattam, several people were left out due to a controversial 50-meter boundary rule. Mounting public pressure and fresh recommendations from local officials prompted the government to act swiftly.

With the latest inclusion, the total number of beneficiaries under the Wayanad Township Rehabilitation Project has now increased to 451, marking a crucial step forward in the state’s disaster recovery efforts.
