Kerala Drenched: Flash Floods Hit Cities, Roads Submerged, Car Plunges into Canal in Thrippunithura

Kerala reeled under the impact of relentless downpours on Tuesday morning, triggering urban flooding, traffic chaos, and dangerous conditions in several districts. Major cities including Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki were the worst hit as streets turned into rivers, homes were inundated, and daily life came to a standstill.

In Thrissur, the situation worsened as water gushed into houses near Ashwini Hospital in Paturaykkal, forcing residents to shift to upper floors. The hospital is under threat of flooding. Several areas remain cut off due to submerged roads, while overflowing streams in Marottichal flooded routes to schools — students were forced to wade through waterlogged paths to attend classes.

Amidst the chaos, a viral video of road tarring in heavy rain on Marar Road sparked outrage online, with citizens slamming civic authorities for their negligence and poor planning.

In Ernakulam, key routes including the national highway saw major traffic blockages due to waterlogging. In Kalamassery, water entered homes, and in a chilling incident in Thrippunithura’s Pettah area, an Uber taxi plunged into a canal obscured by floodwaters. Luckily, the driver was rescued in time.

In the hill district of Idukki, intense rains raised the threat of landslides and overflowing water bodies. With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid flood-prone areas, and remain vigilant.
