Kerala Declares Statewide Dry Days Ahead of Local Body Elections

Ahead of the upcoming local body polls, Kerala has announced a series of statewide dry days to ensure peaceful and fair elections. The State Election Commission (SEC) has imposed strict restrictions on the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol during the polling and counting phases.

As per the schedule, the first phase of polling on December 9 will see liquor outlets shut from 6 PM on December 7 in districts heading to the polls. For the second phase on December 11, the ban will come into effect from the evening of December 9. A statewide dry day has also been declared for December 13, the day of vote counting.

The ban applies to bars, beverage outlets, clubs, restaurants, and even private storage, making it one of the most stringent election-related liquor restrictions in the state. Officials say the move aims to prevent voter influence, avoid disturbances, and maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.

With 1,199 local bodies — including panchayats, municipalities, and corporations — set to vote, authorities believe the decision will help ensure smooth and transparent elections across Kerala.
