Kerala Cracks Down on Private Bus Racing: 10-Minute Gap Mandatory for Route Permits

Thiruvananthapuram: Taking a firm stand against dangerous bus racing, the Kerala Transport Department has announced a major regulatory step—private buses on the same route must maintain a minimum 10-minute interval to receive operational permits.

Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar said the move aims to reduce road accidents and ensure commuter safety. A government order formalizing the rule will be issued soon.

“If bus operators oppose the directive, the government is ready to face legal challenges head-on,” the minister asserted, signaling zero tolerance for violations.

The measure follows a spate of accidents linked to reckless racing among private buses. Reports from the Transport Commissioner and Road Safety Commissioner are awaited before the final order is issued.

Joint operations by the Motor Vehicles Department and the police will enforce the rule and monitor compliance across the state.
