In a swift response to the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) directive, the Kerala government has successfully cleared waste illegally dumped in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district within the mandated three-day deadline .
The waste, primarily biomedical materials from facilities including the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, was clandestinely disposed of in villages like Kodaganallur and Palavoor .
A team of Kerala officials was dispatched to Tirunelveli, where they collected and transported back nearly 30 truckloads of waste. Meanwhile, local authorities in Tamil Nadu disinfected the affected sites to prevent health and environmental hazards.
Authorities have arrested four individuals suspected of orchestrating the illegal waste dumping. The incident has raised public outrage and calls for stricter monitoring and enforcement to prevent such violations in the future .
This cleanup effort highlights the urgent need for cross-border environmental accountability and stricter penalties to deter such unlawful activities.
