Kerala Braces for Very Heavy Rain as Low Pressure Intensifies; Orange Alert in Four Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a severe weather warning for Kerala, predicting very heavy rainfall today under the impact of a strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal near Odisha coast.

Northern Kerala is expected to bear the brunt, with orange alerts issued in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. Widespread rains are forecast to continue across the state until Friday.

For Wednesday, rain alerts are in place across Kerala except in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha. Districts including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram have been placed under a yellow alert for isolated heavy showers.

On Thursday and Friday, the IMD expects more heavy rainfall in Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, with yellow alerts extended in these regions.

The IMD defines “very heavy rainfall” as 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours, raising the risk of flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
