Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to witness intense downpours for the next three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting extremely heavy rainfall until Friday. The forecast attributes the weather to a strong westerly wind pattern and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Red Alerts in High-Risk Districts
IMD has sounded red alerts in six districts as a safety measure:
- Today: Kozhikode, Wayanad
- Thursday: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kannur, Kasaragod
- Friday: Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kannur, Kasaragod
Orange Alerts in Several Districts
Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected today in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, all of which are under orange alert. Most other districts not facing red alerts on Thursday have also been placed under orange alert.
Flood Risk Rises in 5 Rivers
With river water levels rising dangerously, orange flood alerts have been issued for:
- Meenachil (Kottayam)
- Achankovil, Manimala (Pathanamthitta)
Yellow alerts are in place for:
- Korapuzha (Kozhikode)
- Vamanapuram (Thiruvananthapuram)
Critical River Monitoring Stations on Alert
- Orange Alert: Peeroor (Meenachil), Konni (Achankovil), Thondara/Vallamkulam (Manimala)
- Yellow Alert: Kunnamangalam (Korapuzha), Kalleli (Achankovil), Mailamoodu (Vamanapuram)
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has strongly advised the public not to enter or cross rivers under any circumstances. Residents near riverbanks are urged to stay vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations if necessary.
