Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the state today. The IMD has declared a Red Alert for the districts of Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rain that could trigger flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
In addition, an Orange Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kannur, and Kasaragod remain under a Yellow Alert.
The weather department attributed the intense rainfall to a fresh low-pressure system that has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, likely to sustain heavy showers across Kerala until Friday. The IMD also cautioned about thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, urging residents to stay alert and avoid venturing into waterlogged or landslide-prone areas.
For Wednesday, Kannur and Kasaragod districts are under specific heavy rain warnings, with Yellow Alerts in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
According to forecasts, the northern districts of Kerala will continue to experience heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday. The heaviest spells are expected from Malappuram to Kasaragod on Thursday, while Kannur and Kasaragod are likely to witness intense rain on Friday.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, follow official updates, and avoid unnecessary travel as Kerala faces yet another bout of severe monsoon weather.
