Kerala Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Swollen Sea Waves: IMD Issues Yellow Alert in Five Districts

Thiruvananthapuram, April 11, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in five districts of Kerala—Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur—as the state prepares for isolated heavy rainfall on Friday. This is an expansion from the previous alert for three districts, following updated weather predictions.

The IMD forecasts rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours, classifying it as heavy rain. Despite the warning, fishing activities along the Kerala-Karnataka coastline will remain unaffected today, according to IMD officials.

In addition to the rainfall, rough sea conditions are expected due to the “Kallakkadal” phenomenon, which could trigger swollen waves and sea incursion. The coastal stretch from Kappil to Poovar in Thiruvananthapuram may witness wave heights ranging from 1.0 to 1.1 meters on Saturday between 2:30 PM and 11:30 PM.

Furthermore, the Kanyakumari coast is also on alert with wave heights between 1.2 to 1.3 meters anticipated from Friday 8:30 PM to Saturday 11:30 PM. The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has urged residents in low-lying coastal areas to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the shoreline during this period.
