Kerala Braces for Extremely Heavy Rain: Orange Alert Issued for Three Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has updated its rain forecast for Kerala, issuing an orange alert for three districts as the state prepares for extremely heavy rainfall today. The districts of Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are on high alert, with conditions expected to worsen due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

In addition to the orange alert districts, a yellow alert has been declared for Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. The IMD warns that the intense weather is likely to continue into tomorrow, with yellow alerts also in place for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Forecasters predict that northern Kerala will bear the brunt of the downpour. “Heavy rainfall” is officially defined as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in a 24-hour period.

As the weather system intensifies, the IMD has issued a strict advisory for coastal areas. Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture off the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep today and tomorrow.

Strong winds are also a major concern, with speeds expected to reach 40 to 50 km/h, and even gusting up to 60 km/h, along the Kerala coast. Similar conditions are forecast for the Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts from the 2nd to the 4th, with rough seas and strong winds creating hazardous conditions.
