Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is on high alert as a low-pressure system is likely to form over the Arabian Sea by Thursday, bringing widespread and intense rainfall across the state, especially in the northern districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rains, primarily in the Malabar region.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod today. On Tuesday, alerts will continue in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. By Friday, the rain threat shifts south, with Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts also expected to receive heavy rainfall.

According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall is defined as 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. Residents in the alert zones have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Rain is expected to continue intermittently across various districts from May 19 to 23, with conditions likely to worsen as the low-pressure system intensifies over the sea.
