Kerala is witnessing a wave of intense protests and political unrest following the tragic death of a young woman, Bindu, after a building collapse at Kottayam Medical College. Holding Health Minister Veena George morally accountable, opposition parties including the Congress, BJP, Youth League, and their respective youth and women’s wings have launched coordinated, statewide demonstrations demanding her resignation.
The protests turned violent at several locations, prompting police to resort to lathi charge and water cannons to control the crowds. From BJP’s fiery march to the minister’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram to Mahila Congress attempting to storm her office, the state capital saw chaotic scenes. In Kottayam, Youth Congress activists led by MLA Chandy Oommen clashed with police near the medical college. Meanwhile, in Kollam, Yuva Morcha members stormed the district hospital superintendent’s office, and in Thrissur, Youth League workers tried to breach barricades at the DMO office. BJP workers staged blockades in Pathanamthitta, and KSU members carried an effigy of the Health Minister during their protest in Ernakulam. The widespread agitation has amplified public outrage and placed mounting pressure on the state government for swift accountability and corrective measures.
