Chennai: In the wake of the devastating crowd tragedy at a TVK rally in Karur, which left 41 people dead, a CPM delegation is set to visit the disaster site today. The team will also meet survivors and those undergoing treatment.
The delegation is led by CPM General Secretary M.A. Baby, accompanied by Kerala MPs K. Radhakrishnan and V. Sivadasan. Earlier, senior CPM leaders including Politburo member K. Balakrishnan, MP R. Sachidanandam, and MLA M. Chinnadurai had already met victims at Karur Medical College, assuring families of full support. The CPM has also urged the Madras High Court to launch a suo motu probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court will today hear a clutch of petitions linked to the tragedy. One of them squarely blames actor-turned-politician Vijay and his TVK party, holding them responsible for the stampede deaths. The plea was filed by P.H. Dinesh. On the other hand, the TVK itself has approached the court, seeking a CBI investigation into the disaster.
