Karur, Tamil Nadu: A newly filed FIR has shed light on the tragic stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur on September 27, revealing that his extended stay inside the campaign vehicle contributed to rising restlessness among the crowd. The disaster claimed at least 41 lives and left many others injured.
According to the FIR, the crowd had been waiting for several hours, growing increasingly anxious as Vijay’s arrival was delayed. When he finally appeared, a surge toward his vehicle triggered the deadly stampede. While Vijay himself has not been charged, police have registered cases against three key leaders of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) under sections including culpable homicide and causing harm.
Eyewitnesses highlighted that the gathering lacked adequate facilities and safety measures. The incident occurred near a generator shed and a television broadcast van, where dense crowding worsened the situation.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, Vijay announced a ₹20 lakh compensation to support the victims. The calamity has sparked nationwide criticism over event management and safety protocols, prompting authorities to launch thorough investigations to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
