New Delhi: Senior Congress leader K C Venugopal has officially assumed the role of Chairman of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC). On Tuesday, Venugopal stepped into this significant position, traditionally held by a senior member of the principal opposition party in the Lok Sabha.
Venugopal expressed his deep gratitude to key figures in the Congress party, including Speaker Om Birla, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for their trust in him. “As I take charge as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, I am grateful for the faith bestowed upon me,” he said.
The Public Accounts Committee is one of the key parliamentary committees, alongside the Public Undertakings and Estimates Committees, tasked with scrutinizing government spending and overseeing the operations of public sector companies. The PAC plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of public funds. The committee members, drawn from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, serve for a one-year term.
Venugopal succeeds fellow Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who chaired the PAC for the past five years.
