Indian Government Allocates Site at Rajghat for Pranab Mukherjee’s Memorial, Daughter Thanks PM Modi

The Indian government has officially earmarked a site within the prestigious Rashtriya Smriti complex at Rajghat, New Delhi, for the construction of a memorial dedicated to the late Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India. This significant decision was communicated to his daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Sharmistha Mukherjee took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the honor. She wrote, “Called on hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji to express thanks and gratitude from the core of my heart for his govt’s decision to create a memorial for baba. It’s more cherished considering that we didn’t ask for it. Immensely touched by this unexpected but truly gracious gesture by the PM.”

Pranab Mukherjee, who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017, passed away in August 2020. A towering figure in Indian politics, his illustrious career spanned over five decades, during which he held numerous key positions, including Finance Minister, Defence Minister, and External Affairs Minister.

The memorial at Rajghat—a revered site housing the memorials of India’s prominent leaders—symbolizes the nation’s recognition of Mukherjee’s extraordinary contributions. The Rashtriya Smriti complex, dedicated to such memorials, will now also house a tribute to one of India’s most respected political leaders.

This move has been warmly received, underscoring the immense respect and admiration Pranab Mukherjee earned across all political spheres. His enduring legacy will be honored through this memorial, which will provide a place for people to reflect on and celebrate his invaluable service to the nation.
