India Strikes Historic Deal to Import U.S. LPG, Boosting Energy Security

Indian oil companies have signed their first-ever structured contract to import Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from the United States. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the breakthrough, calling it a significant step in India’s push to diversify its fuel sources.

According to Mr. Puri, this agreement is the “first structured contract of U.S. LPG for the Indian market,” marking a major shift away from India’s traditional dependence on West Asian suppliers. The partnership with the U.S. is expected to strengthen energy security, stabilize supply chains, and potentially bring competitive pricing to Indian consumers.

The deal comes at a time when domestic LPG demand is rising, driven by growing household usage and government initiatives promoting clean cooking fuel. The long-term arrangement with the U.S. aligns with India’s broader strategy to expand its global energy partnerships.

The agreement also underscores the deepening Indo–U.S. cooperation in the energy sector, which already spans crude oil, natural gas, and emerging clean-energy technologies.
