India, Germany to Simplify Defence Trade; New Indo-Pacific Consultation Mechanism Announced

New Delhi: India and Germany have agreed to simplify defence trade and deepen strategic cooperation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, marking a significant step forward in bilateral ties between the two countries.

Addressing the media, the Prime Minister announced that India will launch a new consultation mechanism with Germany to enhance collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation on regional security, stability, and shared strategic interests.

PM Modi said both nations are committed to expanding defence industrial cooperation, with a focus on easing procedures, encouraging joint production, and promoting technology partnerships. “Simplifying defence trade will help unlock new opportunities for both countries and strengthen our strategic partnership,” he noted.

In a move expected to benefit Indian travellers, Germany also announced visa-free transit for Indian passport holders transiting through German airports. The decision is seen as a boost to people-to-people ties and ease of international travel.

The announcements came amid broader discussions on trade, investment, green energy, and global challenges, reflecting the growing depth of India–Germany relations and their shared commitment to a rules-based international order.
