Marking a significant step toward improving diplomatic ties, India and China have officially resumed direct commercial flights after a suspension of more than five years. The move is being viewed as a positive signal of warming relations between the two Asian powerhouses.
The first reinstated flight departed on October 26, 2025, from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Operated by IndiGo, the flight carried around 176 passengers, marking the formal reopening of air connectivity between the two nations.
Direct flights between India and China were halted in early 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the escalation of border tensions after the Himalayan clashes that same year. The Chinese Foreign Ministry hailed the resumption as a “very important day for India-China relations”, reflecting a gradual easing of diplomatic strain.
Beyond its immediate logistical impact, the flight restoration is being seen as a symbolic move toward normalization of bilateral ties. Experts suggest it could revitalize trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges, especially since China remains one of India’s largest trading partners.
Despite this positive development, analysts caution that underlying strategic tensions and unresolved border disputes continue to define the complex relationship between the two nations. Still, the reopening of direct flights represents an encouraging sign of dialogue and cooperation.
Looking ahead, more routes are expected to follow. A direct Shanghai–Delhi service is scheduled to begin on November 9, 2025, operating three times a week. Aviation and business stakeholders across both countries have welcomed the move, expecting it to enhance connectivity and economic engagement.
In essence, the resumption of direct flights stands as a powerful symbol of reconnection and cautious optimism, suggesting that India and China may be turning a new page in their often turbulent relationship.
