Thiruvananthapuram: After a short break in monsoon activity, heavy rains have made a comeback across Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue yellow alerts in several districts over the coming days.
On Friday, alerts are in effect for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts. The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall across the state for the next four days.
For Saturday, the yellow alert extends to Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad, while on Sunday, warnings have been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts.
According to the IMD, isolated heavy rainfall — between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours — is likely during this spell. The department has urged residents in hilly and low-lying areas to remain cautious of potential landslides and flooding.
The IMD has also issued a marine warning for fishermen and coastal communities, citing the likelihood of strong winds and rough seas. Wind speeds could range from 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, over the South Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, adjoining Kanyakumari region, and the central-west Arabian Sea.
Similar conditions are expected to persist on Saturday, the IMD added, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
