Heavy Rain to Lash Kerala Today: Yellow Alert Issued in Seven Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to experience intense rainfall today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for seven districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam.

The alert comes as a result of a low-pressure system and an accompanying cyclonic circulation, both of which are expected to trigger widespread rain and thunderstorms across the region. According to IMD standards, heavy rain is defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

The low-pressure area that previously hovered over the Kanyakumari coast has now shifted toward the Lakshadweep–Maldives region and is moving west–northwest. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, adding to the likelihood of continued heavy downpours across Kerala.

Weather experts warn that by Saturday, a fresh low-pressure system is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify into a depression by November 24, as it tracks west–northwest across the central parts of the south Bay. Over the following 48 hours, it may gain additional strength over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

With multiple weather systems active over the region, the IMD has advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions as Kerala braces for another spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
